Bruce Mackay
Bruce Mackay is a 24 year old visual artist based in Cape Town. His work varies between illustration, graphic design and fine art. He specialises in tactile, hand crafted typography and illustration, enjoys designing his own typefaces, drawing with a dip pen and cutting stencil and lino prints.
His work is inspired by his hypochondria, vices, resurrections, X-ray vision, old things he finds in his dad’s garage, loose teeth, nostalgia, contagious diseases, drowning and horses. He tries as best he can to create the tension he finds in controlling or rebelling against his compulsion for balance and order.
Bruce graduated with a Diploma in Visual Communications at AAA School of Advertising Cape Town in 2008. His final project at college, “The Ceasefire”, a book he wrote and illustrated, won a Student Craft Gold Loerie Award for Illustration in 2009.
After working as a motion graphics designer for 9 months he resigned to pursue a career as a freelance illustrator and designer, with hopes to have enough time to work on a new book.
