Dan Rosenthal
Dan was born in Johannesburg in 1982. He decided early on that he was a storyteller and he sees his art as a slowly-told, poetic narrative. Dan studied English and Philosophy and has always made art. He merged these influences into the art he makes today. He loves his home city, but recognises its imperfections. Dan’s fascination with architecture and his love of Johannesburg is strikingly captured in his art.
Dan works in many media from oil paints and drawings to photography – the latter has become his favorite medium because of its elegant simplicity and its unique ability to translate a story eloquently and concisely. Dan favours shooting film because of its visual appeal and the process it forces him to adopt.
As an artist, Dan is concerned with our environment and how it makes us feel and live. Dan intends his work to give viewers pause, to cause them to appreciate the small things we often are too busy to see and to nourish their consciousness.
