Head On Design
Joanna Orr is the creative force behind Head On Design, a graphic and web design company which has produced a series of sculptures, which are an ironic twist on the hunting trophies we as South Africans love, or hate.
From her design studio in central Cape Town, Joanna Orr has explored this concept by creating African animal sculptures in different natural materials, all of which exude an Afro-chic elegance. Staying away from the obvious ‘Big 5’, she focuses on unique features in animals such as the kudu and sable with their striking horns, and the buffalo with its docile masculinity. Each design takes about a month to create and perfect, the process starting with a sketch of the head at different angles to get a feel for the 3-dimensional form. Each sculpture is similar in size to that of the actual animal.
Joanna has been in the creative industry since 1995 and has studied and explored many fields from textile and 3-d design, to graphic and web design, painting, illustration and photography. She has always had a fascination for interiors and sculpture, and from this emerged the idea of creating these pieces.
She has exhibited her pieces at The Design Indaba and The Mandela Rhodes Place in Cape Town and has had pieces featured in various décor magazines.
